Tattered Cover Bookstore was a class act, allowing Malcolm to take a bit of a mental break—which he needed after lunch with Annalie. The attentive handlers put her at ease, which had the added bonus of putting Murray at ease. Malcolm was beginning to worry about the older man. He seemed to be getting more confused as the tour wore on. More often now, his expression was one of bewilderment, and he often asked which city they were in. He was doing a decent job of covering with a joke or pivoting to a story, but Malcolm knew the telltale signs of a declining mind. Malcolm wondered how long he’d been camouflaging.

He shook off those thoughts and went back to puzzling out GMK’s identity—or the person now imitating him. The trail had gone cold again after Seattle, which was two weeks ago. No additional fingerprints were found on the paper and he hadn’t sent any messages since. Malcolm scanned the news in every city they visited and back in Chicago for missing persons reports but nothing matched the old pattern, thank God.

Elissa was still searching for puzzles and his old friends at the FBI were going through the evidence again in light of the new note. Graphology couldn’t be certain that the handwriting was the same, but it was similar enough.

GMK’s an older man now. And he was in a hurry. Could that be enough to make it look different?

No one had a definitive answer.

He mentally went through the list of suspects. Frank the Mysterious Hacker/Blackmailer was at the top, of course, and he was in the wind. Malcolm wondered if he was someone from Rogue House who had infiltrated the writers’ group, gained Annalie’s trust, then betrayed both her and the company. So far, everyone at the publishing house checked out, including everyone who knew Annalie’s itinerary, a relatively small list. All were in New York at the time the note was written in Seattle and no one had a motive for scaring her. If anything, it was in the publisher’s best interests to keep Annalie calm and on the road.

So, how did the person who wrote the note know where we’d be staying? His anger turned for the hundredth time toward Devon and Janice. GMK or the copycat had to be at the airport in the crowd of fans they tipped off, and they were followed to the hotel after all.

Which meant Malcolm was failing at his job.

He ran his hand through his short hair. No, you aren’t failing. She’s safe. He pictured her at lunch, sitting there so coyly driving him mad. Tonight, if I don’t lock that damn door between us I will be in her bed worshipping her body all night long. He may not be the romantic type outwardly, but she wasn’t the only one with an imagination.

And there was no way he’d lock the door between them.

Satisfy her, satisfy yourself. Then let her go. Just don’t let her in. You aren’t meant for romance and she’s an angel who’s too good for you.
